Our 10th annual Euro soccer Tournament was held from the 20th - 22nd May in Hattingen, Germany. Teams from England, Holland and Germany competed this year although schools from Belgium, Spain and Poland have taken part in the past. Although the tournament is the feature event, our thirteen Year 8 and 9 pupils were also involved in beach soccer, a volleyball tournament and other activities which helped all of the students to mix and interact.
The first game of the tournament saw us play Holland who have won this event in 6 out of the 10 previous years. Alex Cook scored for us within the first 30 seconds. Three similar goals were scored in the first half making the coach’s half time team talk a little easier. We scored 4 further goals in the second half with Sonny Greaves scoring a total of 5 goals. The second game saw Germany beat Holland 11-2 leaving the third game between Germany and us as the crunch game. The Germans were technically very good and retained possession very well. We took the lead with a Theo Richardson free kick being headed in by Sonny Greaves. The Germans equalized before Sonny restored the lead with a lovely chip over the goal keeper. However, the Germans weren’t finished and they equalized with a header from a corner with 3 minutes left. A 2-2 draw at this stage would see the Germans win on goal difference. We managed to get a free kick with seconds to go. Sonny floated the ball into the penalty area where Theo Richardson ghosted in to head the winner. There wasn’t enough time to take the kick off after the goal. Too close for comfort!
Well done to the boys for winning the 2012 Euro Soccer Competition! We look forward to hosting next year’s tournament.
