2012 The Year of the Dragon

Today is the start of the Chinese New Year celebrations and 2012 is the Year of the Dragon. The dragon symbolizes power which was always used on the Emperors clothes. In Ancient China the Chinese custom was that only the Emperor was allowed to use the dragon on their clothing. If anyone else used the dragon design they would have been killed! Today it symbolizes a year of power for all.

Students have been busy preparing for the Chinese New Year by learning how to make Chinese paper cuttings decorations and lanterns. Mrs Chen and Mrs Wang our Chinese teachers have shown students, who are studying Chinese, how to create Chinese decorations. They have also learnt about the many traditions and celebrations that take place at this time of year in China.

Staff in the Buzz Bar have created a special Chinese Menu for break and lunchtime today. At break staff and students can enjoy Chinese Chicken and Sweet Corn Soup with Chicken Spring Rolls. On offer at Lunch time there will be Thai Red Curry and Noodles Char Siu Vegetable Rice. Both served with a Mini Selection of Oriental Bites.

Students and staff have recently visited our partner school in China Tangshan Foreign Language School. It is in the Hebei Province and we have been partnered with the school for twelve years. We are one of thirty two Confucius schools who are nationally approved and are supported by the China Government. The school has organized trips to China every year. Last year students and staff visited many of China's landmarks including The Great Wall of China. While they were there they had many opportunities to put into practise their new language

Happy Chinese New Year!
